U.S. Supreme Court to Hear CIPA Case This Term
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Nov. 12 to review the constitutionality
of the portions of the Children's Internet Protection Act that require
libraries receiving certain kinds of federal funding to install filters
on their computers that access the Internet.
Earlier this year, a special three-judge panel blocked the enforcement
of those provisions after the American Library Association filed suit.
Libraries must still adopt an Internet safety policy after holding a
public hearing. Schools, meanwhile, continue to be subject to all of the
CIPA requirements.
